Cleveland Browns 2011 Season

  • NFL players Lockout lasts from March 11, 2011 to July 25, 2011
  • The expired Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) allows for the 2011 Draft to take place April 28-30. The Browns take Baylor defensive tackle Phil Taylor in the 1st round, U. of Pittsburgh defensive end Jabaal Sheard and UNC wide receiver Greg Little in the 2nd round, USC tight end Jordan Cameron and Stanford fullback Owen Marecic in the 4th round, U. of T. at Chatanooga cornerback Buster Skrine and U. of Pittsburgh offensive tackle Jason Pinkston in the 5th round, and Nebraska safety Eric Hagg in the 7th round
  • Cleveland implements the West Coast Offense (which utilizes shorter, horizontal passing routes and hopefully frees up running lanes) but with a shortened preseason they have little time to work on it
  • April 27, 2011 Peyton Hillis is picked by fans to be on the cover of the EA Sports Madden 12 video game. He beats out Michael Vick and representatives from the other thirty NFL teams
  • On July 28, 2011 the Browns sign free agent running back Brandon Jackson to a two year, 4.5 million dollar contract. Jackson, who led the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers with 703 yards rushing, is expected to help relieve Peyton Hillis in the backfield
  • On August 2, 2011 Browns punter Reggie Hodges suffers a season-ending torn achilles. On August 3 the Browns sign former Eagles and Bears punter Richmond McGee. Prior to the regular season opener against the Bengals McGee suffers a herniated disc during the pregame warmups. McGee goes ahead and plays but shanks three punts during the game. On September 13 the Browns place McGee on injured reserve and sign 14-year veteran former Giants, Bears, and Texans punter Brad Maynard
  • On August 17, 2011 left guard Eric Steinbach leaves practice with a back injury. On August 30 the Browns place him on the injured reserve list ending his season. Rookie guard Jason Pinkston replaces him
  • My wife and I go to the Browns new stadium on August 19, 2011 and see the Detroit Lions defeat the Browns 30-28. One bright spot is undrafted free agent running back Armond Smith's 81 yard touchdown run. After four games Smith is put on waivers by the Browns on October 18th, 2011. He is added to the Browns practice squad on October 23
  • On September 3, 2011 the Browns place newly acquired running back Brandon Jackson on the injured reserve list after he suffers a season-ending toe injury
  • On September 11, 2011 the Browns lose the regular season opener to the Cincinnati Bengals when the Browns defense is not set and former Browns QB Bruce Gradkowski hits a wide open A.J. Green for a 41 yd TD pass
  • On September 25, 2011 Peyton Hillis sits out the Browns 17-16 victory over the Miami Dolphins with strep throat. Controversy arises when some suggest he sat out because of his ongoing contract negotiations with the Browns. On October 16 Hillis suffers a hamstring bruise against the Oakland Raiders. After missing the next two games Hillis reinjures his hamstring in practice and misses three more games. He returns on Nov 27 and rushes for 65 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. On December 18 he runs for 99 yards against the Arizona Cardinals and on December 24 he rushes for 112 yards against the Baltimore Ravens defense
  • On October 17, 2011 the Browns sign running Chris Ogbannaya off the Houston Texans practice squad. In hs fourth game for the Browns against the Jacksonville Jaguars Ogbannaya rushes for 115 yards and a touchdown
  • In the 13th game of the season, Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison hits Colt McCoy and receives a helmet to helmet one-game suspension. McCoy suffers a concussion and misses the last three games of the season
  • The Browns lead the NFL with 43 dropped passes. Atlanta was second with 37 dropped passes
  • The Browns offense finishes 30th out of 32 teams. Defensive coordinator Dick Jauron's Browns defense finishes 5th out of 32 teams. Rookie defensive end Jabaal Sheard leads the team with 7.5 sacks followed by rookie defensive tackle Phil Taylor with 4.0 sacks
  • With a 4-12 record the Browns have the 4th overall pick of the 2012 draft
