Cleveland Browns 2009 Season

On January 7, 2009 the Browns hire Eric Mangini to be their new head coach. He had previously been Bill Belichick's defensive coordinator and also head coach of the New York Jets
On February 27, 2009 the Browns trade tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. to Tampa Bay for two draft picks
Kicker Phil Dawson misses five games due to a calf injury. The Browns sign former Dallas Cowboys and journeyman kicker Billy Cundiff who kicks the game winning field goal in a 6-3 victory over the Buffalo Bills
On October 7, 2009 the Browns trade wide receiver Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets for wide receiver Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trusnik and a third and fifth round draft pick in the 2010 NFL Draft
After Cleveland's bye week which is Week 9 of the NFL season and with the Browns record standing at 1-7 Brady Quinn replaces Derek Anderson as the starting quarterback
After going 1-11 the Browns upset the Pittsburgh Steelers 13-6 in a Thursday Night Game. The defense sacked Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger eight times. This is the beginning of a four game win streak for the Browns to finish out the season
In Week 8 of the 2009 season Ted Ginn Jr. of the Miami Dolphins becomes the first player in NFL history to return two kickoffs 100 yards for touchdowns in the same game. In Week 15 Josh Cribbs becomes the second player to accomplish this feat by returning one kickoff 100 yards and a second kickoff 103 yards in a 41-34 victory over the Kansas Chiefs
Browns running back Jerome Harrison breaks Jim Brown's single game team rushing record of 237 yards by running for 286 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs. Only Adrian Peterson with 296 yards rushing against the San Diego Chargers in 2007 and Jamal Lewis with 295 yards against the Browns in 2003 have rushed for more yards in a single NFL game
Josh Cribbs and Jerome Harrison break San Francisco 49ers Jerry Rice and Dexter Carter's NFL record of 550 all-purpose yards gained by two teammates in a single game by combining for 614 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs
Josh Cribbs leads the NFL with 3 touchdowns on kickoff returns. He also has 1 punt return for a touchdown which leads the NFL with four combined return touchdowns. Cribbs leads the NFL in combined return yardage with 1,994 yards
Josh Cribbs' returns three kickoffs for touchdowns in 2009 which gives him an NFL-record eight kickoff returns for touchdowns for his career
On November 2, 2009 Jamal Lewis announces he will retire after the season. Before the end of the year he is placed on the injured reserve list. On February 17, 2010 the Browns release Lewis
On December 21, 2009 the Browns hire former Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Holmgren to be president of the Cleveland Browns
