Cleveland Browns 2003 Season

  • Kelly Holcomb beats out Tim Couch for the starting quarterback position in preseason
  • In the second game of the season Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis rushes for 295 yards against the Browns setting the NFL single game rushing record
  • Running back William Green rushes for 115 yards in a 33-13 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the next game he runs for 145 yards in a 13-7 victory over the Oakland Raiders. The next game against the San Diego Chargers Green suffers a shoulder injury and misses the New England game on October 26. Green is arrested on October 27, 2003 for marijuana possession and DUI. The NFL suspends him for four games and later extends it for the rest of the season for treatment and counselling purposes. On November 19, while on suspension, Green's fiancee is arrested for stabbing him in the back. In January of 2004 the NFL reinstates Green for the 2004 season
  • After the ninth game of the season the Browns release their 1999 #2 draft pick wide receiver Kevin Johnson
  • During the 13th game of the season against the St. Louis Rams kicker Phil Dawson breaks his arm but finishes the game
  • The Browns release the 1999 #1 NFL draft pick Tim Couch after the 2003 season. Over the next few years Couch tries out unsuccessfully for several teams. Tim Couch was plagued by injuries beginning with the 1999 season because the newly-formed Browns offensive line was not good and allowed him to lead the NFL in being sacked the most of any other quarterback. His best season ended with a broken leg after getting the Browns into the 2002 playoffs. He threw for more than 2800 yards in 2002 and 3000 yards in 2001. If Tim Couch had been allowed to develop rather than being thrust into the second game of his rookie season he may have been a successful NFL quarterback.
