Cleveland Browns 1978 Season

  • NFL institutes 16 Game Season
  • Browns hire Sam Rutigliano, who had been an assistant coach with the Broncos, Patriots, Jets, and Saints, to be their new head coach
  • Ozzie Newsome's Rookie Year. Although the Browns draft Newsome as a wide receiver (he played both tight end and wide receiver at Alabama under Bear Bryant) head coach Sam Rutigliano convincs him to play only the tight end position with the Browns. In the first game of the season (and his first game as a pro) Newsome scores on a 33 yard reverse against the 49ers. When he crosses the end zone he spikes the ball. He is embarrassed by this action because in college he was taught to demonstrate class on the field. The next day he calls his college coach, Bear Bryant, to apologize and never spikes the ball again
  • Thom Darden has 10 interceptions and becomes the first Cleveland Browns player to lead the NFL in interceptions
  • After five years with the Browns (two of which were on the Taxi Squad) Brian Sipe begins to show signs of his future greatness as the Browns starting quarterback with 21 touchdown passes and a QB rating of 80.7
