Johnny Manziell and NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell at the 2014 NFL Draft

  • On January 23, 2014, after having trouble finding a head coach in a search that lasted 25 days, CEO Joe Banner and General Manager Mike Lombardi hire Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine
  • On February 11, 2014 owner Jimmy Haslam fires GM Lombardi and announces Joe Banner's eventual departure from the team. He promotes assistant GM Ray Farmer to take Lombardi's place
  • On May 8, 2014, the NFL draft begins with the Browns having the 4th overall pick. The Buffalo Bills really want Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins so they trade the 9th overall pick in this draft and their 1st round and a 5th round pick in the 2015 draft to the Browns for their 4th overall pick. Then the Browns acquire the 8th overall pick from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for the Browns' 9th overall pick and a fifth-round pick. With the 8th pick the Browns take Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert. Then the Browns become the talk of the draft when the Dallas Cowboys take Notre Dame offensive tackle Zack Martin with the 16th overall pick instead of Johnny Manziel. The Browns have the 26th overall pick because of the Trent Richardson trade with the Indianapolis Colts last year. They acquire the 22nd overall pick from Philadelphia Eagles for the 26th pick and a third round pick. With the 22nd pick the Browns choose Texas A&M QB Johnny "Football" Manziel. Later it comes out that reportedly the Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones was restrained by his son from taking Manziel with the 16th pick. True or not, Jones, shortly thereafter, expresses serious regret for not taking Manziel
  • On May 12, 2014 the Browns sign undrafted free agent Alabama State running back Isaiah Crowell along with South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw
  • Before the preseason starts Johnny Manziel stays in the sports headlines for his partying. Once the preseason starts he focuses on football
  • On August 27, 2014 Josh Gordon loses his appeal and will serve a year-long suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy
  • On September 12th, 2014 the NFL players accept a restructuring of the NFL substance abuse policy. Under this agreement Josh Gordon's suspension is reduced to 10 games
  • The Browns start the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Heinz Field with Brian Hoyer as the starting quarterback. After a horrible first half with the Steelers leading 27-3, the Browns rebound with a no-huddle offense and tie the game 27-27 before losing on a last second field goal. The Browns set an NFL record by losing ten season openers in a row
  • In the second game the Browns host the New Orleans Saints. The Browns take an early lead but are behind in the fourth quarter when Brian Hoyer leads the Browns on a game-winning drive ending in a field goal. This is the first home-opener win by the Browns since 2004. Johnny Manziel gets in the game for three plays, 2 handoffs and a dropped pass by fullback Ray Agnew. Rookie running backs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell stand out for a combined 122 yards and several first downs gained on the ground
  • On October 5th, 2014 the Browns travel to Nashville to play the Tennessee Titans. After being down 28-3 in the first half, the Browns mount a comeback and end up winning 29-28 with Travis Benjamin catching two TD passes from Brian Hoyer. This is the largest comeback on the road by any team in NFL history
  • The Browns followup their historic comeback win with a 31-10 home victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, this proved to be a costly victory as Browns Pro Bowl center Alex Mack breaks his leg and is out for the season. Mack had never missed a game since being drafted in 2009. He was the anchor of the Browns O-Line which allowed the Browns to average 146 yards rushing per game through the first five games. The Browns would average 90 yards rushing the last eleven games. They would go through three more centers by the end of the year
  • On November 23, 2014 Josh Gordon returns to the Browns as they defeat the Atlanta Falcons 26-24. The victory was costly as Tashaun Gipson left the game in the fourth quarter after colliding with CB Joe Haden and suffering a serious knee injury on the play. Gipson would miss the rest of the regular season
  • The Browns with a 7-4 record and look like they could make the playoffs. However, this would be the last victory for the Browns in the 2014 season
  • The next week the Browns lost to the Buffalo Bills 26-10. Brian Hoyer continued his inconsistent play and was benched in the second half. His replacement, Johnny Manziel, led an 80 yard touchdown drive on his first series. This led to a QB controversy in the following week. Coach Pettine eventually named Hoyer as the starting QB against the Colts. The injuries continue to hurt the Browns as WR Miles Austin is out for the season after the Bills game
  • The Colts, who will end up winning two playoff games before losing to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game (a.k.a. the infamous "Deflategate" game), are expected to dominate the Browns. However, the Browns defense roughs up Colts QB Andrew Luck sacking him three times, causing him to throw two interceptions, and forcing him to fumble once into the end zone which the Browns recover for a touchdown. Browns kicker Billy Cundiff misses a field goal which would later hurt the Browns as they lose 25-24 after Luck leads the Colts on a 90 yard drive resulting in the gamewinning TD with 36 seconds left. The offense struggles again under Hoyer and so on Tuesday December 9, 2014 Coach Pettine announces that Johnny Manziel will start against the Cincinnati Bengals. On December 13th the Browns release kicker Billy Cundiff. That same day the Browns sign former New Orleans Saints kicker Garrett Hartley to replace Billy Cundiff who had injured his knee
  • Manziel plays badly against the Bengals as they rout the Browns 30-0. The following week he is equally dismal as the Carolina Panthers defeat the Browns 17-13. Manziel takes a huge hit from Panther LB Luke Kuechly and suffers a season-ending hamstring injury
  • On December 26, 2014 due to injuries to both Hoyer and Manziel, Pettine names rookie Connor Shaw the starting QB in the final game against the Ravens. Shaw completes 14 of 28 passes for 177 yards and one interception in a losing effort 20-10
  • The Browns season started out very promising as they went 6-3 and were in first place in the AFC North. The slide downward started with the injury to Alex Mack and as the season went on Hoyer became inconsistent in his play. Tashaun Gipson, Joe Haden, and Joe Thomas are named to the Pro Bowl. One highlight for the Browns is when guard Joel Bitonio is one of only two rookies named to the All-AFC team
